"Come on, Elizabeth," Jessica called, stopping at the back door to wait for her twin. "I'm in a hurry."

"You're waiting for me?" Elizabeth asked as she followed her sister outside. "What's going on?"

"Lila went out last night with the new girl, Rose, to see if she'd be interested in joining Pi Beta," Jessica said excitedly. "I've got to find out what happened before school starts."

"Oh," Elizabeth said distractedly. "Rose seems like a nice girl."

What's wrong with Elizabeth this morning? Jessica wondered. Jessica stopped a few feet from the Fiat. She shook her head sadly. "Oh, what a shame," she said in mock seriousness, "none of the tires is flat. I was really hoping I'd get a chance to see you change one."

Elizabeth climbed into the driver's seat. "Very funny, Jess."

Jessica gave her twin a look as she got in beside her. "Come on. Where's your sense of humor?"

Elizabeth shook her head. "I'm sorry, Jess. I can't get my mind off my contest with Todd."

"I was wondering what happened with that," Jessica said. "Weren't you supposed to build a boat or something next?"

Elizabeth started the engine. "I was supposed to make a shelf. Only when Enid and I went to the hardware store to get the materials, we couldn't get anyone to help us."

Jessica looked at her twin in surprise. "You're kidding. Did you ask?"

Elizabeth made a face. "Of course we asked. But the store was full of professional builders and people like that. I guess we were intimidated."

Jessica shook her head. "I can see you need some expert help. And I'm just the girl you need. Right after school we'll go over there together."

"But you don't know anything about carpentry."

"As I always say, you don't need to know how to change tires or build shelves. You just need to know something about male psychology," Jessica said.

"But Jess—"

Jessica held up her hand. "Right after school. Trust me."
